Le XVIIème Congrès International de Botanique s’est tenu à Vienne (Autriche) du 17 au 23 juillet 2005. Plus de 4 500 botanistes du monde entier ont participé à ce congrès et 2730 posters ou communications y ont été présentés, marquant la vivacité et la diversité de la botanique au niveau international.

Tela Botanica était représenté par Valéry MALECOT (INH Angers) et Joël MATHEZ (Université Montpellier II). Ils ont proposé un poster dans la section "Databases, Bioinformatics, Electronic Communications, Education" dont voici le texte résumé en anglais :

Abstract n° P2701. Tela-Botanica : a network for francophone botanists J. Mathez, D. Mathieu, J. P. Milcent, V. Malécot

Tela-Botanica is a network of botanist currently including more than 3000 members and around 40 discussion groups. It hosts the synonymic index of the French flora including three overseas départements (Réunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique) (voir le site ). This nomenclatural dataset is based on the work of Michel KERGUELEN (1928-1999) and was converted into a database by Benoît BOCK. It was modified following thousands of comments and corrections by members of the network. The third version of the database includes 79930 names for 15799 taxa (a fourth enlarged version is to be launched in 2005). For each name is recorded the correct Latin name, place and date of publication and vernacular names. Other documents are available on line : a French translation of the International Code for Botanical Nomenclature, a database of French Herbaria (with herbaria missing from Index Herbariorum), a database of publications on botany (25 000 articles), and lists of plant species for 70 départements (out of 96). The network currently develops, among other things, tools for floristic inventories on PDA, and electronic methods for plant identification.

L’index des auteurs et les résumés de toutes les communications sont disponibles au format .pdf en téléchargement à partir du site Internet de l’IBC . Ce document de 730 pages "pèse" 7,6 Mo... Il est possible d’y rechercher un auteur ou un mot en plein texte à partir du moteur de recherche du logiciel Acrobat Reader.

Durant la semaine précédant le congrès, la session de nomenclature a étudié les propositions d’amendement au Code International de Nomenclature Botanique, un nouveau Code de Nomenclature est donc à prévoir courant 2006.

La prochaine édition de ce congrès aura lieu en juillet 2011 à Melbourne (Australie).
