What - identification of the observed entity / taxon identification attributes
  • Scientific Name for the taxon or community (NOTE: use the Taxon Concept Transfer Schema endorsed by TDWG in fall 2005)
  • Author of the scientific name (species only); concept reference
  • Name Type – species or ecological community
  • Name Confidence – is the taxon or community correctly identified
  • Presence / Absence Indicator - 'No' indicates explicit negative observation data

Who - observer / collector of the information
  • Observer – name of the person(s) who collected data
  • Observer Role(s) – observer, collector, submitter, verifier
  • Observer Title
  • Observer Institution
  • Contact information – address, phone number, email

When - observation / collection event date / time
  • Date / time of the observation – includes either a full date, partial date, or range of dates / times; time optional; follow ISO date / time standard
  • Date / Time Accuracy

Where - location attributes
  • Location Description - text description of the location where the observation was made or the area that was searched.
  • Latitude, Longitude, and Datum (decimal degrees)
  • Link to GIS feature (point, line or polygon)
  • Directions - precise directions to the site of the observation.
  • Mapping Precision
  • Mapping Comments - ability to map the Observation precisely.
  • Darwin Core location attributes – Continent, Nation, State or Province, County, Locality, etc.
  • Elevation and Depth – minimum and maximum values

How - survey methods / intensity / protocol
  • Protocol Name - a formal or informal name for the protocol (can be “none” or “unknown”)
  • Protocol Description - text description of the protocol / methods used
  • Protocol Type - the type of protocol
  • Protocol Reference – citation for a published protocol (can include links to online resources or protocol library)
  • Search Adequacy – comments on search thoroughness, habitat, methods, environment, observer experience, ease of detection, timing.
  • Additional Inventory Needed - Is additional inventory of the area needed for this element?
  • Level of Effort - effort expended on a given visit


Evidence – documentation attributes (specimens, references, images)
  • Evidence Types (basis of record) - sample values: Specimen, Sighting, Literature, Photograph, Tracks, etc.

Biology - associated biological attributes
  • Number of Individuals (species)
  • Estimated / Observed – whether number is an estimate / actual count
  • Stratum / Percent cover – community data (and cover for plants)
  • Density / Distribution - distribution of the element on the landscape (e.g., solitary individual, patchy, scattered, solid cover)
  • Reproductive Evidence - element reproducing at the location?
  • Reproductive Evidence Comments
  • Condition of Element – description of the quality of element (such as: health, alive or dead)

Environment - associated environmental attributes
  • Habitat - text description of the local or surrounding habitat
  • Habitat Category - habitat type (use IUCN codes?)
  • Condition of Site - condition of the surroundings (e.g., flooded, burned, etc.)
  • Weather - description of the weather conditions at the time of the visit
  • Management Activities –activities conducted during a particular visit (e.g., pulling or pesticides applied to invasives)
  • Management Needs - the most important management needs (for enhancement or control) for the element at this observation site

Data management attributes – quality control, etc.
