Tela Botanica, the network of French speaking botanists
Bringing together botanists - Sharing knowledge - Organizing initiativesThe Network
The Tela Botanica Network contributes to bring together all French speaking botanists to promote free sharing of knowledge and respect for the environment.
Its mission is to promote sharing of information and facilitate projects related to botany with the help of new communication technologies.
Registration to the Network is not compulsory and is free; it allows:
- to locate members of the Network in all countries
- to submit questions and share information on all types of botanical topics
- to be kept informed of news regarding botany
- to take part in collective projects of the Network
Projects
Some of the projects facilitated by the Network :
- Synonymy Index of the French Flora. This database totalises more than 80,000 names for more than 18,000 different taxa. To every name is associated its synonyms, bibliographic references as well as vernacular names in french and six other european languages.
- French overseas “Départements” Index : Réunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique, etc.
- French translation of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
- Database of all French herbaria (including herbaria not found in the Index Herbariorum)
- Database of references of French botanical publications (more than 25,000 articles)
- Distribution maps of the French flora.
- Xper-botanica : project of dynamic tools for help in plant identification with PC or pocket computer.
Newsgroups
Tela Botanica facilitates newsgroups on a wide variety of botanical topics : general botany, tropical plants, carnivorous plants, Orchids, pteridophytes, bryophytes, lichens, wild plants associated with crops, ethnoboty, phytosociology, invasive plants...

re developed in a cooperative spirit. It conceives databases, creates websites, search engines, map displays and data entry tools adapted to all types of botanical projects.
Tela Botanica follows an active partnership strategy with NGOs and government and private organizations and institutions by offering its expertise to establish links between all botanists of the french speaking community. Its tools can also be used in languages other than French.
